Promptings to Minister?

Yesterday during I was driving out to buy lunch as I did not cook for Sunday after the virtual sacrament meeting. I received a WhatsApp message from Sister Joyce.

Sister Joyce was mentioning that she can’t help but notice that one of the sisters whom previously at Subang Jaya branch but lives at Shah Alam was not in the ministering list. She asked if she has overlooked.

I just texted her back that particular sister’s name is listed in the District 2 list. Then she replied to me that she managed to see her name in that list.

After I came into the office this morning, my mind was thinking of this particular sister. Sister Luisa birthday is today and so many members that wished her in the WhatsApp chat group.

I checked the birthday calendar, and so co-incidentally that sister’s birthday shared the same day as Sister Luisa today. Thus, I think it is an opportunity for me to wish her happy birthday and starts a conversation with her. I just get her hand phone number and start to WhatsApp her.

I wished her happy birthday and introduced myself as the Relief Society President from Puchong branch. Surprisingly she replied me. I asked her permission for me to add her contacts into the both Puchong Branch chat group and Puchong Relief Society chat group. Briefly introduced to her that there are the group which we will post any branch activities and Relief Society activities. She gave me the permission to add her in our chat group.

I continued to brief her that, we are conducting our Sunday School through Zoom every 1st and 3rd Sunday after sacrament meeting. And Relief Society classes every 2nd and 4th Sunday after sacrament meeting. There is a Mandarin gospel class on Zoom every Sunday which joined by the Mandarin speaking members from different cities in Malaysia. She was quite happy to know that.

I suggested that I would send the Mandarin zoom link to her if she would like to try it out so that she can decide for herself if she is feels good about the class, then she can join the Mandarin class chat group. I invited her to join for this coming Saturday Relief Society Ministering Workshop Online Activity too if she has time.

I am glad that I finally acted upon the thoughts or promptings that came to my mind this morning, and Sister Joyce’s messages yesterday. Her name has been came to my mind for quite sometime, and I kept on delaying the promptings of contacting her. It was like Sister Joyce reminds me on the promptings that I need to reach out to this sister.

I texted to Sister Joyce and thanks her for reminding me of that particular sister. I mentioned to Sister Joyce that I thought that particular sister does not want to join our Puchong branch chat group, because previously all the sisters had been added in but without her. Moreover that particular sister’s name was in the less active sisters list.

I shared with Sister Joyce my thoughts and feelings as it was quite surprised to me that, that particular sister replied my messages and she is willing to join our branch chat group. I learned my lesson here today that I need to follow the prompting to act.

Sister Joyce shared with me that the sister became less active because she had misunderstand with the sisters in the branch before, but after Brother Felix and she fellowship and encourage her, then they manage to ask Presidency to add her name back to their branch chat group and the sister was fine with it, as earlier on the sister just leave the group.

Later I just shared with Sister Joyce that I had assigned 3 sisters to minister to her, as part of our efforts in ministering to the less active sisters. Sister Joyce shared that it would be a good idea as this sister also need new friends too.

Print

I thanked Sister Joyce again for reminding me, if not I surely will miss her out. It is because the fears of rejection and feelings of shyness, inadequacy, or being an inconvenience keep on came to my mind that hinder me from following the prompting to minister.

I am grateful to the promptings and the patience that the Lord has for me as I am so slow and sometimes ignorance the promptings from the Spirit.

One by One

It was about nearly 8.00pm, I received a WhatsApp message from Sister Sally. She need my help to choose for Frank, her son a Chinese character names from 2 different source: one is from Frank’s kindergarten teacher and the other one is from Frank’s primary teacher.

After which during our text and voice messages, I got to know her family name and she would like to put her family name into Frank’s Chinese character name. I seek her approval for me to share it with Sister Vivian, as she is a sister from Taiwan and her Mandarin should be better than me.

After discussed with Sister Vivian then both of us agreed that we choose what we think is the better one. Then I called Sister Sally and shared with her about our thoughts on Frank’s Chinese character name.

After checking with her how is Frank’s first online school day today, then I only got to know that she and Frank had been quarantined in the home for few days already. It was due to her brother had been diagnosed with COVID-19 positive.

Sister Sally shared with me how she and her brother were trying their best in overcome this challenges and she was not able to go to work and all these days were unpaid leaves. But she sounds very positive facing all that had happened. She reassured that she and Frank are in good conditions as they do not have the COVID-19 symptoms.

It was indeed feeling great to hear her nice and beautiful voice that transpired through the hand phone sounds so happy and joy during this period of time. I did ask her please do not feel shy to reach out to us if she needs anything or our assistance. She promised that she would. We wish take care and stay safe to each other before we ended our tele-conversation.

After put down my hand phone, there is an impression come into my mind – One by One. That was and is how the Savior do His ministering work. This had reaffirmed to me that what the Spirit is trying to teach me.

As what Elder Ming-Shun Kuan of the Seventy taught,

“Ministering one by one is the way of the Savior… as we follow His example, learn of His ways, and minister to those family members, friends, and brothers and sisters around us. When we do this, we will feel and experience the meekness and lowliness in heart of the Savior and find rest unto our souls.5

And, I am grateful that the Lord reveals to me that I should Ministering One by One. One at a Time.

Ministering Assignments

It took us quite sometime to put up the new ministering list, and I had decided to post the detailed ministering list in the Relief Society WhatsApp group chat.

The purposes of which letting the sisters check the information as stated in the Church record is the latest information of theirs and their family, such as the hand phone contacts, home address and email address.

And at the same time, can let the sisters know who is who’s ministering sisters. I did this before in the group chat, but this is the first time I did after we have joined by more sisters into Puchong branch.

After a while, I received a message from Sister Annie that one of the sisters was not comfortable as her home address was shown in the public. Immediately after that the sister personally message me if is it possible that the addresses can be removed from the list and kept private. Thus, I deleted the detailed ministering list and replaced with the proposed ministering assignment list, which without information but just the names of the sisters.

Later I just checked with the sister would want her information to keep private from her companion sister too, and I apologized to her for putting up the list that had made her feel uncomfortable.

The sister shared with me that she is ok sharing her information with her companion sister and all the sisters whom are ministering to her and she is ministering to. She was not comfortable with having that information being made public and she is staying alone, so she just wanted to be safe than sorry.

After which I apologize to her again as I being not sensitive enough and I will forward the ministering list separately then. She asked me not to be worried about it, thanks and appreciate for having the trouble to send the ministering list separately to the sisters.

ministering card - 2020 1st qtr front

This incident have given me some thoughts that I never experience before when I serve my calling. I guess all these while I am not sensitive enough to the needs of the sisters. This is quite an embarrassing experience as I am like in the spotlight and being watching by all the sisters in the group chat.

After the text communications with the sister, I feel more easy and comfortable. But I am grateful that it gives me a chance to sort of get to know the sister and knows about her concerns.

The first thought that came to my mind is the Lord is teaching me to minister His sheep one by one. Ministering one by one is how the Savior does.

I have been struggled with ministering for quite sometime even before I received my current calling as Relief Society President. I think my calling came as a result of my prayer to the Lord seeking for help to improve in my ministering. Not knowing before hand, this small prayer of mine had caught me red handed and such a weight just landed on my shoulders.

For the first year of my calling, I have tried and juggling between my work, serve in the Church, my family responsibilities. I had already wanted to give up especially after came back from Kuching which we celebrated Chinese New Year there.

I had been lectured much from my sister in-law as my roles as a mother to monitor and cultivate both my children’s interest and attentions into their studies. Well it is a good wake up call for myself, and at that moment I was feeling not up to standard of being a ‘Mother’.

Last year after I talked to the branch president, then the MCO lockdown occurred in our country. While during at home busy preparing meals and household chores, both of my counsellors came up to me and reminded me that we should strengthen each sisters so that they would be spiritual uplifted during this pandemic.

Even though I thought that I would be released soon but I still need to continue to fulfil my calling till the day I will be released. Sisters were happy when we did our video calling them. And that was how I learned more about sweetness of the fruits of ministering. Seeing the beautiful faces of the sisters and how firm their foundation are strengthen me.

After our country started to go for the recovery order, my life again with the work, daily chores, everyday errant and I kind of lacking in my service while the Church from last March 2020 till now is unable to open again due to the spike of Covid-19 cases again.

Due to Puchong branch Relief Society members became larger after the ex Subang Jaya Relief Society sisters joined in, we need to adjust the new ministering list.

I feel as it is quite difficult for me alone to do the assignment list. I have been hearing about that I can get the revelation I needed to do it because I the Lord will inspire me to do so.

I am not sure if the list which I came out is good enough for all the sisters, but I hope that everyone of us the sisters can able to try to do that little part of this caring about a sister life and becoming part of her life.

And today I know that, the Lord is further to teach me to minister one by one as He did, which I am grateful for – that I still able to recognize this impression that came.

I thanked for the continuous teaching that He willingly to pour unto me, even though sometime I have become numb to that still, small yet powerful voice that is always ready to guide me daily.

I know that He is there to give me experience that He knows that I lack of. I am grateful for that I did not miss the opportunity that He gives me to truly hear and connect with that sister and getting to know her better.

Eyes to See

Eyes to See

by Sister Michelle D. Craig

Seeing God’s Hand

Sister Craig started her talk by sharing what we commonly learn about the story in the scripture – about a young man helping the prophet Elisha. The young man was worried because their city was surrounded by the enemy and it did not look like there was any way to survive the upcoming battle. The prophet Elisha said to the young man,

“Fear not; for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.”

Isn’t that reassuring? I feel so overwhelmed with all the battles I take on and face during the day. Some pretty nasty battle wounds and some defeats hurt more than others. Often times I forgot that I am not fighting these battles alone.

Some battles don’t even need to be fought! As I gain ore experience, I am learning it is important to pick my battles. When I stand firm and choose the right and stand firm at the beginning as what Elder Bednar talked in his talk “We Will Prove Them Herewith” what has Elder Holland counselled to young adults, “Choices have to be made. Not making a choice is a choice. Learn to choose now.”

I am also learning that I do not have to fight alone because I have family and friends on both sides of the veil that will help me.

However she has opened her eyes with a new lesson to learn:

“There may be times when you, like the servant, find yourself struggling to see how God is working in your life—times when you feel under siege—when the trials of mortality bring you to your knees. Wait and trust in God and in His timing, because you can trust His heart with all of yours. But there is a second lesson here. My dear sisters and brothers, you too can pray for the Lord to open your eyes to see things you would not normally see.”

This is the question or prayer that I had never think about. What are the things that I can pray for the Lord to see the things I do not normally see?

Then the answers were Sister Craig explanations on the following;

Seeing Ourselves as God Sees Us

“Perhaps the most important things for us to see clearly are who God is and who we really are—sons and daughters of heavenly parents, with a “divine nature and eternal destiny.”2

“Ask God to reveal these truths to you, along with how He feels about you. The more you understand your true identity and purpose, soul deep, the more it will influence everything in your life.”

There were so many times that the Lord reminds me in the midst of my challenges that I am a daughter of God. All those moments brought peace and comfort to me. And gave me strength to press forward even not knowing what would be placed in front of me.

One thing I know is that: The Lord shall prepare a way that I may accomplish the thing because He knows I can handle it. He put the trust in me that I can do it, even I do not have such faith and trust in myself.

Seeing Others

“Understanding how God sees us prepares the way to help us see others as He does. Columnist David Brooks said: “Many of our society’s great problems flow from people not feeling seen and known. … [There is a] core … trait that we all have to get … better at[, and that] is the trait of seeing each other deeply and being deeply seen.”3

CONFERENCE QUOTES

“Jesus Christ sees people deeply. He sees individuals, their needs, and who they can become. Where others saw fishermen, sinners, or publicans, Jesus saw disciples; where others saw a man possessed by devils, Jesus looked past the outward distress, acknowledged the man, and healed him.4

“Even in our busy lives, we can follow the example of Jesus and see individuals—their needs, their faith, their struggle, and who they can become.5

“As I pray for the Lord to open my eyes to see things I might not normally see, I often ask myself two questions and pay attention to the impressions that come: “What am I doing that I should stop doing?” and “What am I not doing that I should start doing?”6

I realised that I do not have much experiences on seeing others, most of the time I was too concern about my own trials and challenges that made me lost sight about the people around me. I only consider my sufferings and pains, my eyes would not be able to see others around me.

Suddenly I have a thought that: there is a reason why my calling as Relief Society President came along. The Lord wants me to learn to open my eyes to see things and seeing others when I serve the sisters in the Church.

When I get to know the each sister in the Church, I started to learn that not only me whom struggle with my own challenges, sisters that I serve to also have their own trials and afflictions.

Some struggled with mental illness and depression. Some are single and others had large families, while still others struggled with infertility or divorce. Some are fluent speakers and impressively literate, while others struggled to put together a coherent sentence.

But there is one thing in common that I recognize, is that they all are committed to the gospel of Jesus Christ and to build the kingdom of God. I can see the faith in their daily doings, in the things they make with their hands and the relationships they develop with every sisters in the branch and with Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father.

When I worried about children’s future education, certain sisters would came into my mind and reminded me of think of ways to improve the children studies.

When I saddened and felt heartache with my relationship, certain sisters reminded me that I still can hope and trust the Lord that everything is in His good hand and He knows what is the best for me and my family.

When I was nearly give up for my calling, certain sisters stood next to me, helping me and teaching me to expand my heart and ability to love and serve, just as they had done to others.

Little did I know, Relief Society sisters strengthen me just like how they strengthen each other.

I know that this is only a very small part of how I seeing others, but may be not deeply enough.

Seeing God’s Errand for Me

“As with all gifts the Father so willingly offers, seeing deeply requires us to ask Him—and then act. Ask to see others as He does—as His true sons and daughters with infinite and divine potential. Then act by loving, serving, and affirming their worth and potential as prompted.”

“As this becomes the pattern of our lives, we will find ourselves becoming “true followers of … Jesus Christ.”8 Others will be able to trust our hearts with theirs. And in this pattern we will also discover our own true identity and purpose.”

One of the reason being called is to run God’s errand. Most of the time I think I am just like the priest or the Levite on the road to Jericho – one who looks and passes by.

Seeing others as Jesus sees them deeply and seeing God's errand for me is something I have to pray for the Lord for myself. I like how Sister Craig ended her talk:

“I witness that Jesus Christ loves us and can give us eyes to see—even when it’s hard, even when we’re tired, even when we’re lonely, and even when the outcomes are not as we hoped.”

“Through His grace, He will bless us and increase our capacity. Through the power of the Holy Ghost, Christ will enable us to see ourselves and see others as He does.”

“With His help, we can discern what is most needful. We can begin to see the hand of the Lord working in and through the ordinary details of our lives—we will see deeply.”

I am grateful for the General Conference study plan that I found on internet, that it indeed guide me and direct me to know the things that I need to focus in each talk at one time, and at the designated period what I have going through.

A Small Journal for A Sister

I received a text message from Sister Sophia last two weeks ago. It was a Sunday night. She told me that she might need a new journal book, as her current one already filled with her testimony.

This message brings some joy to me. I have been encourage the sisters in Relief Society to write down their testimonies ever since I have been called as the Relief Society President.

Our baptismal covenant is to remember Jesus Christ, by writing down our testimonies is one of the ways that we remember Him. I believe that writing our own testimonies into the journal or any kind of gratitude journal is a way to remind ourselves, what God had done for us and how we can see His hand in our life.

I did tell the sisters that they can ask from me anytime if they want a second book after they finish their first book. Sister Sophia is the first sister that asked me for a second journal book. I feel so encourage as there is someone indeed listen into her heart and writing her testimonies become an important part of her life.

Buying a simple note book from shop, searching for their favourite scripture versus and general conference quote online, getting to print it out and plastic laminated and paste them as the cover of the journal, decorate the inner cover page with some other general conference quotes – that is how I normally do for the journal that I want to gift to the sisters.

It cost a little may be is RM10.00 per journal book, but I feel joy when I see and hear when the sisters benefited from this small little journal book that I gift them.

After Issac’s art class at Citta Mall, I drove to Puchong Mas where Sister Sophia lives. I met with her mum Sister Teresa, to pass her the journal book as she was still working and not at home. We have a brief chat as the Condominium Building Management, just checked on each other how were things going on lately.

I received a text from Sister Sophia in the evening that she likes the journal book very much. I just replied her that she is most welcome to look for me after she finish this new journal book of her.

6c9001f03c8699754b1e12820e130b58

I am grateful that at least I have a chance to serve the sisters in the branch, hope to bring a little bit of light to the sisters in the branch.

How Do I #HearHim?

~ Sister E Chin Yong E Chin

"In both ancient and modern times, God introduced His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ, and invited those seeking direction to “hear Him” (Matthew 17:5). In 1820, a young man’s willingness to follow that invitation ultimately led to the Restoration of Christ’s Church on the earth (see Joseph Smith—History 1:17). Two hundred years later, the invitation to hear Him is given to each of us."

"When we take time to listen with our hearts, the heavens open and He speaks. Jesus taught that He is “the light of the world” and those who follow Him “shall not walk in darkness” (John 8:12)."

"God still speaks today, and the joyful call remains to hear Him. As you listen to Jesus Christ, you will feel His love for you. As you #HearHim and act on what you hear, you will feel the joy and fulfillment His words bring to all who seek Him."

By listening and hearken to the invitation extended by our prophet, Sister Yong E Chin reflected and share with us how she hear Him through prayers, reading the scriptures and slowing down listen to the hymns.

Please do come in and listen what she would like to share with you, the joy that she experienced in her journey to #HearHim.

The Importance of the Home & The Family

~ Sister Amy Lee Lim

What Does Home Mean to You?

What is the "Family" in Your Mind?

In a world of turmoil and uncertainty, it is more important than ever to make our families the centre of our lives and the top of our priorities. The Family is ordained of God. Families lie at the centre of our Heavenly Father’s plan.

This statement from “The Family: A Proclamation to the World” declares the responsibilities of parents to their families:

“Husband and wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children. ‘Children are an heritage of the Lord’ (Psalms 127:3). Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, to teach them to love and serve one another, to observe the commandments of God and to be law-abiding citizens wherever they live. Husbands and wives—mothers and fathers—will be held accountable before God for the discharge of these obligations.”

With this belief in mind, Sister Amy came to know about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in one occasion. She learned about the restored gospel and the Church teachings humbly, working hard in ensuring her home is a safe and warm place that her family can go to, no matter what circumstances happened.

Please do come in and listen what she would like to share with you.

May it be our resolve this year to build a gospel-centred home, a safe harbour from the storms of the adversary.

When I heard about the Young Women Baking Activity, suddenly it reminds me of our Relief Society during early of the year, we were planning activities and gifts for the Mothers and Fathers in the Church.

No one would know that the Covid-19 just came as a storm and would turned to a global pandemic and affect globally and have disrupt all our lives and planning. The situation might be a little better now as from last 4 May 2020, Malaysia Government has replace the Movement Control Order (MCO) with CMCO as the Covid-19 cases become lesser and it seems like it is better.

I feel as it is time for the Relief Society to do something for the sisters and brothers in the Church, especially at the time like this. We were planning to prepare healthy dried fruits and nuts for the sisters during Mothers Day and big red apples for the brethren during Fathers Day early of the year.

After some discussions with both counsellors Sister Annie and Sister E Chin, we decided to go ahead with our original plans. We would prepare for both Mothers and Fathers and hopefully able to distribute before Fathers Day.

Sister Annie was helping buying the apples, dried fruits and nuts and the beautiful wrappers as well. Together with the help from few sisters, she managed to prepare all that needed.

Combined effort with the cookies made by Young Women and Young Men yesterday, we planned out and get our lists to deliver. I am getting help from both Issac and Annabelle to deliver.

Started from Sister Saffron’s house for Sister Saffron and Bro Tan, Kelvin and Beam. Then we went to Sister Sylvia’s condo, after which is Sister Jennifer and Bro Tesh, then Sister Josie and Sister Michelle and Peter. We went to Sister Parames’s house before we went back to home.

It took departed from our house at 10.00am and we were only back around 2.30pm in the afternoon and taken our lunch at that time. We were so hungry as we did not take the breakfast.

Of coarse the last delivery destination is our home to deliver to the children daddy Alvin. We took a moment for some photo shots for remembrance. What a meaningful day!

Happy Father’s Day Relief Society, Young Women & Young Men Baking Activity

7594dccf-7201-4ae8-985a-729f901a3bd3

Today is Friday and it is still a school day for both Issac and Annabelle, but today is little bit unusual and special for both children as there is Young Women Baking Activity for Annabelle.

6da18ed4-b3df-4bbe-8f48-825fc31c0d29

It was kind of difficult to organize this baking activity during this Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) period, as all the children are at home and not allow to go to school, and of coarse we as parents too are worried about letting our children out for activities.

The ideas comes from the Young Women organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is celebrating 150 Years Anniversary.

The Young Women General Presidency is inviting all the young women turn 12 through 18 years of age to join the challenge called “My 150” to think of an activity they can do related to 150 to commemorate the anniversary.

It can be anything from choose to read 150 pages of scriptures or index family history 150 names, or to share 150 smiles or 150 encouraging texts or social media posts with friends who need a lift or a boost.

Or join with other youth in ward and take 150 names to the temple for proxy baptisms as soon as we are able to return to those sacred spaces.

Thus, the young women in Puchong branch were thinking of bake 150 cookies for the fathers in the branch during the Fathers Day.When I heard about this ideas from Annabelle in one of our conversations, I was pretty impressed with the Young Women Leaders’ ideas.

I decided to let Issac join in as well because he is the only young man in our branch after much discussion with our Young Women Leaders, I decided to let Issac join in as well because he is the only young man in our branch.

Thus, I send both of them to Sister Amy’s house early in the morning before I went to office. Both of them would be skip the PE lessons online as it is quite difficult for them to follow.

The baking activity will be held at Sister Jing Jing’s home whereby she is the Young Women Counsellor. Sister Amy drove both Issac and Annabelle together with Yna and Ruth to her home.

It is very thoughtful and kind of Sister Jing Jing that she prepares 2 separate rooms for the girls and boy that still need to attend the class online. The youths would have to take turns to bake their cookies, while some were having online classes thru Zoom or Google Meet.

Three of the sisters – Sister Amy, Sister Jing Jing and Sister Annie lead the activity. All of the young women and young man take turns to learn to bake 2 different types of cookies – chocolate chip raisin cookies and dried fruits and nuts cookies.

The young women too lead by Yna making Father’s Day and Mother’s Cards for all the fathers and mothers in the Church. All the girls learning from her how to make a wishing card.

Both Issac and Annabelle had the opportunities to cook the group lunch. It is quite surprise for me when Sister Jing Jing sending me the photos of both of them standing in front of the cooking stove cooking the fried noodles!

I know that they were having fun too! both of them are very proud on the noodles that they fried and prepared for all the persons.

They also celebrate Ruth’s birthday as she is turning to 19 years old and going to Relief Society. The activities were ended only around 6.00pm, as they need to pack the cookies in the wrappers.

I feel so grateful that our girls and boy have such a dedicated leaders in the Church to guide and lead them. Young Women President Sister Amy whom coordinate the activity with the parents;

829e4114-c7b8-468f-a63c-2e17d90304e3

Young Women Counsellor Sister Jing Jing whom planned and lend us out her kitchen for the youths to learn to bake and cook and Relief Society Counsellor Sister Annie whom helped out and teach the youths on the recipes for the baking activity.

All the girls and boy and leaders were tired but I know that they were having much fun, especially during this CMCO time!
