Letter to My Children

Today is a national holiday – Nuzul al-Quran. We had a good sleep throughout and woke up at about 9 a.m. Issac wanted to go to the nearest Puchong Prima photo studio to take his U.S. visa photo. Then we went for our lunch at Kopitiam near our home.

We decided to go to Main Place USJ21 to have some ‘lepak’ time in Starbucks as now Starbucks has every day during Ramadan month has RM5 on a second handcrafted beverage with any handcrafted beverage purchased. We got ourselves a chocolate cream chip and a peach passion blossom cream Frappuccino.

We had a good time spending time together doing our interest. We went to Popular for a while and we had our early dinner at Ayam Penyet Best Station. I am glad we had a good time together this afternoon.

This reminds me of the letter that I wrote to my children in my Institute assignment: list five or more promises that will help me “rear [my] children in love and righteousness, provide for [my children’s] physical and spiritual needs, and teach [my children] to love and serve one another, observe the commandments of God, and be law-abiding citizen wherever they live” (“The Family: A Proclamation to the World,”) After each of the promises, I need to write to my children why I think it is so important that I, as their parents, fulfill that promises. And need to refer specifically to the sixth and seventh paragraphs of the family proclamation for ideas. Here is what I wrote:

Dear Children,

I promise to pray with you every day. I know it is important that you have a personal relationship with your Heavenly Father. I know He is there, and He will hear and answer your prayer. You can pray to Him anytime and anywhere.

I promise to study the scripture with you. I know you will find peace and strength to resist temptations when you study scriptures daily because scriptures are the words of God. You will invite the Holy Ghost into your life.

I promise to teach you by example how to budget time and resources. Teach you about self-reliance and the importance of preparing for your future. It encourages you to independent learning to unlock your potential and grow to be passionate and capable contributors to the work of salvation.

I promise to spend individual time with you, letting you choose the activities and the subject of conversation, and eliminating distractions by putting away electronic devices. I promise to help you create happy memories by building our family traditions, meaningful vacations, and wholesome activities.

I promise to be there and listen to you if you approach me with a problem, see issues from your point of view, and resist the urge to give you a solution. Instead, ask questions for clarification and arrive at a solution together. I want you to know it is ok if you make a mistake, and making a mistake does not affect my love for you.

Love,

Mother

Tender Mercies by Annie Henrie Nader. Image via AltusFineArt.com

This is a painting of a mother with her two children, and an angel supporting her. It is a sacred moment of sacrifice, endurance, and great love. This painting is also a tribute to the many tender mercies in our lives – the sweetness found in motherhood, and also the angels who come to our rescue in the form of friends and family. By seeing these tender mercies we come to know God’s great love for His children.

Faith is for the Future ~ Issac Reminds Me…

My mind was cluttered in the evening after the children and I came back from our dinner at the Medan Selera. It was going worse when I think of Alvin was not in the home as according to him, went for outstation.

All of the negative thoughts, all the doubts were flushing into my mind and heart like a brown rushing water. Where would he be? Is he really there as what he had told us? Is there another woman or the same woman again this time?…

After taking my bath, I could not stand but I talked to Issac what I felt inside my mind and heart when he was sitting at the study desk looking at his hand phone. He just looked at me with the puzzle and helpless impression, and keep quiet listening to his mum murmuring.

I sat down on the floor, taken both my small pocket notebook and my action book, browsing through the talk yesterday about Alma and Alma the younger. Suddenly Elder Jeffrey R. Holland’s talk ‘Remember Lot’s Wife’ came to my mind. I just look it up in the YouTube Channel, thus just play the video.

“Remember Lot’s Wife”: Faith Is for the Future

by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland

I listened to the talk while trying to read through yesterday talk, but Elder Holland’s humour way indeed attracted me all the time and I started to put down the things I was doing and listened carefully to his address.

Issac was sitting next to me, and both of us were enjoying Elder Holland’s talk. When both of us listen till this point of the the talk,

“That happens in marriages, too, and in other relationships we have. I can’t tell you the number of couples I have counselled who, when they are deeply hurt or even just deeply stressed, reach farther and farther into the past to find yet a bigger brick to throw through the window “pain” of their marriage. When something is over and done with, when it has been repented of as fully as it can be repented of, when life has moved on as it should and a lot of other wonderfully good things have happened since then, it is not right to go back and open up some ancient wound that the Son of God Himself died trying to heal.”

Issac stopped the YouTube, he smiled and looked at me and said, “Mum, you know, every time when you tell me all these stuffs, my heart will thinking like… here we go again.”

He pointed his finger to my hand phone which he paused the YouTube, “Now, you should learned from this talk, it is already pass and it is ancient wound you know?” Issac winked at me.

I cannot help but laugh! It seems as this little child of mine already grown up become like a little man!

I can see clearly the happiness or rather the relief in his eyes, signally to me as his heart was jumping in joy as “Yes! This is what I needed the most and God had saved me from my crazy mum!”

Issac touched my hand phone's screen with his finger, then the talk continued,

“Let people repent. Let people grow. Believe that people can change and improve. Is that faith? Yes! Is that hope? Yes! Is it charity? Yes! Above all, it is charity, the pure love of Christ. If something is buried in the past, leave it buried. Don’t keep going back with your little sand pail and beach shovel to dig it up, wave it around, and then throw it at someone, saying, “Hey! Do you remember this?” Splat!”

“Well, guess what? That is probably going to result in some ugly morsel being dug up out of your landfill with the reply, “Yeah, I remember it. Do you remember this?” Splat.”

We looked at each other and laugh again. I paused the video again, and wanted to share with Issac my thought.

“Issac, do you know that this talk I had already listened sometime ago and I listened so many times. I do not know why when I sat down just now just after talked to you, this talk came into my mind. It is just like the Lord knows you and wants to share with me. You know what I mean right?”

He just nodded his head and smiles. I guess both of us experience the same tender mercies moments from the Lord, but it was different things we learned or testimony that we gained for both of us.

We continued for the rest of the video:

“And soon enough everyone comes out of that exchange dirty and muddy and unhappy and hurt, when what God, our Father in Heaven, pleads for is cleanliness and kindness and happiness and healing.”

Such dwelling on past lives, including past mistakes, is just not right! It is not the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is worse than Miniver Cheevy, and in some ways worse than Lot’s wife, because at least there he and she were only destroying themselves. In these cases of marriage and family and wards and apartments and neighbourhoods, we can end up destroying so many, many others.”

“Perhaps at this beginning of a new year there is no greater requirement for us than to do as the Lord Himself said He does: “Behold, he who has repented of his sins, the same is forgiven, and I, the Lord, remember them no more” (D&C 58:42).”

“The proviso, of course, is that repentance has to be sincere, but when it is and when honest effort is being made to progress, we are guilty of the greater sin if we keep remembering and recalling and rebasing someone with their earlier mistakes—and that “someone” might be ourselves. We can be so hard on ourselves, often much more so than with others!

“Now, like the Anti-Nephi-Lehies of the Book of Mormon, bury your weapons of war, and leave them buried. Forgive, and do that which is harder than to forgive: Forget. And when it comes to mind again, forget it again.

“You can remember just enough to avoid repeating the mistake, but then put the rest of it all on the dung heap Paul spoke of to those Philippians. Dismiss the destructive and keep dismissing it until the beauty of the Atonement of Christ has revealed to you your bright future and the bright future of your family and your friends and your neighbours. God doesn’t care nearly as much about where you have been as He does about where you are and, with His help, where you are willing to go. That is the thing Lot’s wife didn’t get—and neither did Laman and Lemuel and a host of others in the scriptures.”

This is an important matter to consider at the start of a new year—and every day ought to be the start of a new year and a new life. Such is the wonder of faith and repentance and the miracle of the gospel of Jesus Christ…”

Just before I sat down on the floor, I looked at my pocket notebook as it was totally blank and I wonder if today there is not such or single spiritual moment for me to jot down or for me to feel grateful for?

And now, here it comes… reminds me that He is there with me all the time. This experience teaches me that, He is with my children all the time when they need His guidance too.

I love these final few quotes from Elder Jeffrey R. Holland:

“To all such of every generation, I call out, “Remember Lot’s wife.” Faith is for the future. Faith builds on the past but never longs to stay there. Faith trusts that God has great things in store for each of us and that Christ truly is the “high priest of good things to come.”

004ccb49e058f9371624298a8cafb0bb

“…When we have learned what we need to learn and have brought with us the best that we have experienced, then we look ahead, we remember that faith is always pointed toward the future. Faith always has to do with blessings and truths and events that will yet be efficacious in our lives…”

“…Keep your eyes on your dreams, however distant and far away. Live to see the miracles of repentance and forgiveness, of trust and divine love that will transform your life today, tomorrow, and forever…”

I am so grateful for the tender mercy experience that both Issac and me have this evening. It does filled and warmth my heart!

A Surprise Welcome Gift for Seminary

Today, Issac and I went to Church for our tithing settlement interviews after our church online sacrament meeting. We met President Augustine at the new chapel in his office.

IMG_4133

After our interview, President Augustine took out a paper bag and told us that these presents are from her daughter Sister Anita. Anita was called a seminary teacher who teaches the youths in the Church in seminary.

IMG_4134

Next year Annabelle would turn age 14, and it will be her first year to attend seminary class every Saturday morning. After came back home, Issac and Annabelle opened out their presents happily.

IMG_4135

It was a box of chocolate for each of them and with slight notes from Sister Anita. Both are happy about the little surprise welcome gift from their seminary teacher for next year.

Leaders are encouraging young women worldwide to think of the activity related to 150 to commemorate the anniversary. They had done it through the cookies baking for last June. Now they are planning to do a bookmark. Thus, I helped Annabelle printed out the selected bookmarks.

IMG_4060

IMG_4057

Both Issac and Annabelle work as a team to do the cutting, laminating, and punch the hole tie the ribbons for all the bookmarks. Finally, let's have a group photo together with all the bookmarks.

The bookmarks are intended to give it away to their friends or someone they know or pass along to others to spread the gospel of the things that the young women believe in.

Issac Yu Ivan >> 2021, I Will… Our World Art Exhibition 2020

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and new norms, Jane Yap Atelier decided to make the biannual art exhibition virtual. Like a torch relay in the Olympic Games, the baton pass on one by one. But the baton here is the artbook. It will be named, "2021, I will …" - Our World Art Exhibition 2020.

9430deb9-8a73-48ad-bccc-e53c2a0dd70a

Issac was the second student in this album no. 8. The title of the album is "If a fierce/friendly tiger is in front of me, I will …". He got the album on 10/10/2020 Saturday morning, as the previous student did it quite fast, here was the video and photo of the handing over of the album.

The parents of each participate student would have to help the Atelier to video the torch relay journey. There are specific camera settings of the video requirements which needed to meet. And for each of the videos or photos to record down includes receiving the album, starting drawing or while drawing, completing drawing the car journey to the next student, and handing over the album.

Capture

Here is how Issac opened up the album to check what he should be drawing.

Capture1

Here is during Issac was drawing and coloring the tiger and himself in his artwork. Here is Issac's artwork.

Capture2

There are some gentle reminders for the students to adhere to this relay. Some of these reminders are: the students need to sanitize their hands before drawing. Place cardboard behind the assigned page so that the marker ink does not get through to the next page.

Capture3

Do not vandalize other students completed artworks. Sanitize the front and back plastic cover of the album and the plastic Ziploc bag before handing it over to the next student; each student is required to complete the artwork within three days, etc.

Here is the video on handing over the album to the next student on 15/10/2021 Thursday night.

Here is the photo of handing it over to both siblings.

8d80f9fd-eb12-4ebe-a6b7-5f4711956751

Overall, Issac feels satisfied with his artwork because this is the first time he can complete a painting within a few days. It is a fun experience for him as well.

Issacs's Meows… ^^

The shoes had been bought quite some time ago at Fufa Shoes which is located near our house at Meranti Jaya. Initially, we were looking for casual outing shoes for both children. Eventually, we found out this pair of white shoes which we felt was pretty good for Issac.

The idea of want to paint the shoes came to our mind, and we suggested to Issac that we can do that with these shoes. After some thoughts and get some ideas of what to draw. Suddenly he just took some paintbrushes, a color palette, and his acrylic paints and pencil started his draft, and finally, this is the work!

It looks so amazing with the cat’s eyes looking into your eyes!

Belated Mother’s & Father’s Day Gift Packs Delivery

103793037_10105851122276275_1133025891811433729_o

When I heard about the Young Women Baking Activity, suddenly it reminds me of our Relief Society during early of the year, we were planning activities and gifts for the Mothers and Fathers in the Church.

104412368_10105851121702425_2282193363323403474_o

No one would know that the Covid-19 just came as a storm and would turned to a global pandemic and affect globally and have disrupt all our lives and planning. The situation might be a little better now as from last 4 May 2020, Malaysia Government has replace the Movement Control Order (MCO) with CMCO as the Covid-19 cases become lesser and it seems like it is better.

104481253_10105851125120575_2655924586342216106_o

I feel as it is time for the Relief Society to do something for the sisters and brothers in the Church, especially at the time like this. We were planning to prepare healthy dried fruits and nuts for the sisters during Mothers Day and big red apples for the brethren during Fathers Day early of the year.

105537118_10105851121946935_182192648411435106_o

After some discussions with both counsellors Sister Annie and Sister E Chin, we decided to go ahead with our original plans. We would prepare for both Mothers and Fathers and hopefully able to distribute before Fathers Day.

IMG_1828

Sister Annie was helping buying the apples, dried fruits and nuts and the beautiful wrappers as well. Together with the help from few sisters, she managed to prepare all that needed.

IMG_1830

Combined effort with the cookies made by Young Women and Young Men yesterday, we planned out and get our lists to deliver. I am getting help from both Issac and Annabelle to deliver.

IMG_1837

Started from Sister Saffron’s house for Sister Saffron and Bro Tan, Kelvin and Beam. Then we went to Sister Sylvia’s condo, after which is Sister Jennifer and Bro Tesh, then Sister Josie and Sister Michelle and Peter. We went to Sister Parames’s house before we went back to home.

IMG_1839

It took departed from our house at 10.00am and we were only back around 2.30pm in the afternoon and taken our lunch at that time. We were so hungry as we did not take the breakfast.

IMG_1842

Of coarse the last delivery destination is our home to deliver to the children daddy Alvin. We took a moment for some photo shots for remembrance. What a meaningful day!

Happy Father’s Day Relief Society, Young Women & Young Men Baking Activity

7594dccf-7201-4ae8-985a-729f901a3bd3

Today is Friday and it is still a school day for both Issac and Annabelle, but today is little bit unusual and special for both children as there is Young Women Baking Activity for Annabelle.

6da18ed4-b3df-4bbe-8f48-825fc31c0d29

It was kind of difficult to organize this baking activity during this Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) period, as all the children are at home and not allow to go to school, and of coarse we as parents too are worried about letting our children out for activities.

101d10df-b8ab-4acf-9f43-9d80f0df5055

The ideas comes from the Young Women organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is celebrating 150 Years Anniversary.

8988fb16-50d1-4c1a-ad78-9929f5cf8ea2

The Young Women General Presidency is inviting all the young women turn 12 through 18 years of age to join the challenge called “My 150” to think of an activity they can do related to 150 to commemorate the anniversary.

5b05a550-8473-4b4d-aefd-15b3b061d8a7

It can be anything from choose to read 150 pages of scriptures or index family history 150 names, or to share 150 smiles or 150 encouraging texts or social media posts with friends who need a lift or a boost.

7bb60c1d-7a41-4008-b6d0-d4f76b666958

Or join with other youth in ward and take 150 names to the temple for proxy baptisms as soon as we are able to return to those sacred spaces.

588e47ec-890d-41ce-af35-81647b1dd6e2

Thus, the young women in Puchong branch were thinking of bake 150 cookies for the fathers in the branch during the Fathers Day.When I heard about this ideas from Annabelle in one of our conversations, I was pretty impressed with the Young Women Leaders’ ideas.

ad6bd2c8-7943-49de-8654-dceaeb945da5

I decided to let Issac join in as well because he is the only young man in our branch after much discussion with our Young Women Leaders, I decided to let Issac join in as well because he is the only young man in our branch.

79575b70-ca0a-4a37-8e08-eb2261187a30

Thus, I send both of them to Sister Amy’s house early in the morning before I went to office. Both of them would be skip the PE lessons online as it is quite difficult for them to follow.

4cdee249-fdd6-4aa0-af39-5552032f07ad

The baking activity will be held at Sister Jing Jing’s home whereby she is the Young Women Counsellor. Sister Amy drove both Issac and Annabelle together with Yna and Ruth to her home.

69c1c79e-8096-4126-ad85-b44b4f9e724c

It is very thoughtful and kind of Sister Jing Jing that she prepares 2 separate rooms for the girls and boy that still need to attend the class online. The youths would have to take turns to bake their cookies, while some were having online classes thru Zoom or Google Meet.

d02945a1-a682-475c-95e2-9dfe8ceff330

Three of the sisters – Sister Amy, Sister Jing Jing and Sister Annie lead the activity. All of the young women and young man take turns to learn to bake 2 different types of cookies – chocolate chip raisin cookies and dried fruits and nuts cookies.

e013c38c-8f50-4e91-be76-579cec1834ca

The young women too lead by Yna making Father’s Day and Mother’s Cards for all the fathers and mothers in the Church. All the girls learning from her how to make a wishing card.

57dba699-dbcb-4ef1-b5f5-ef0f6329d656

Both Issac and Annabelle had the opportunities to cook the group lunch. It is quite surprise for me when Sister Jing Jing sending me the photos of both of them standing in front of the cooking stove cooking the fried noodles!

7844ed41-351b-4909-9192-2c2e38b46cdc

I know that they were having fun too! both of them are very proud on the noodles that they fried and prepared for all the persons.

43fc5ecb-b0cb-4a22-b6b3-c3a2d7f09b98

They also celebrate Ruth’s birthday as she is turning to 19 years old and going to Relief Society. The activities were ended only around 6.00pm, as they need to pack the cookies in the wrappers.

7d41c584-5682-41c9-a1d9-2c783c3bbebc

I feel so grateful that our girls and boy have such a dedicated leaders in the Church to guide and lead them. Young Women President Sister Amy whom coordinate the activity with the parents;

829e4114-c7b8-468f-a63c-2e17d90304e3

Young Women Counsellor Sister Jing Jing whom planned and lend us out her kitchen for the youths to learn to bake and cook and Relief Society Counsellor Sister Annie whom helped out and teach the youths on the recipes for the baking activity.

821ac8a2-c2e4-4127-9548-8b94d1eb42cb

All the girls and boy and leaders were tired but I know that they were having much fun, especially during this CMCO time!
